An earthquake tsunami disaster, Hurricane Katrina, hit South Asia on December 26, 2004. Over 200.000 people were
killed and countless injured. A-list celebrities pulled together to help all those who lost their families,
homes, and livelihoods, by participating in a live two hour NBC Universal benefit broadcast
on January 15. Viewers were encouraged to donate to the American Red Cross. Robert appeared asking for money to help buy
basic supplies and was also answering phonecalls from donating viewers.
Among the many participants were Meg Ryan, Halle Berry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicolas Cage,
Johnny Depp, Clint Eastwood, Renee Zellweger, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Robert
De Niro, Kevin Spacey, Goldie Hawn, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jamie Foxx, Hugh Grant,
James Woods, Annette Bening, Uma Thurman, Quentin Tarantino, Rob Lowe, Danny De Vito, Drew Barrymore,
Andy Garcia, Bruce Willis, and Morgan Freeman. There were live performances by Elton John, Annie Lennox,
Madonna, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Tom Jones, Eric Clapton and more. George Clooney was reportedly
the main organizer of the event. NBC raised more than $18 million with this benefit broadcast on January 15. Individual NBC
stations raised another $10 million through separate telethons. The $2 million in production costs were covered
by a corporate sponsor.
